Question:
What is the cure for endometriosis?
Answer:
There is no cure. But there are
treatments to reduce the symptoms
and pain.
Surgery can
be done. A good endometriosis surgeon
will search carefully, and thoroughly
remove all the endometriosis lesions
he can find. But be aware that not
all surgeons have equal skills,
and even excellent surgeons may
miss a few spots in this kind of
tedious surgery. It’s important
to find an excellent endometriosis
surgeon. There are medications which
are often used to suppress hormone
levels
in an attempt to shrink the endometriosis
implants.
Doctors often
prescribe birth-control pills as
a first line of defense. This may
help for a time, but be aware that
more intensive treatment may be
needed later.
Other treatments
are being used, as well, such as
immunotherapy, and more are under
investigation. Feel free to ask
the group about specific treatments
or new developments you are interested
in.
